This 1856 yataghan sword bayonet was made for the .577 calibre Enfield short rifled musket.
Beaked pommel with well-rounded end housing broad and deep T- shaped attachment slot. A small plain press stud, located on left side, operates locking catch via long steel leaf spring recessed within right side of pommel and grip. Back of pommel straight and flat, underside rounded. Pommel meets grips vertically. Two-piece black chequered leather grips, the left grip secured by four small steel rivets, right grip retained by three rivets and the leaf spring securing screw. Back and underside rounded and straight. Straight steel crosspiece, lower guard tapers to swept forward disc finial, upper guard formed into full muzzle ring, topped by swept forward oval finial.
588mm heavy single-edged yataghan blade has a broad 11mm flat spine and a deep fuller on each side. The spine bears the letter "K" and a faded "crown" cypher over "33". The ricasso is stamped "1/85" - its manufacture date of January 1885 and the obverse with "E/Crown/33" the Enfield Royal Small Arms Factory inspection mark, the war "pheon" and the War Department initials "WD" (adopted around 1856) over "Crown/E/59". The tang is stamped with inspection marks "Z", "G.G", "JW" with base of the pommel on the tang marked "crown/E/53", on the reverse side of the spring catch, a war "pheon" and on the reverse tang "F" followed by "A" and "529" marked on the pommel.
The original leather scabbard with steel mounts with frog stud to the throat; bears the war pheon on the back.
*Condition*
This 1856 Pattern Sword and Original Scabbard are in excellent condition. The blade is clean from pitting and nocks and only has mild discolouration commensurate with age and service. Good clear markings. The grip is slightly tarnished and has the expected minor signs of wear and tear. The button works well. The metal scabbard fits securely.
