*British, 1854 Pattern Infantry Officers Sword & Scabbard, retailed by Larcom & Vesey, Portsmouth*
86cm blade, 101cm overall.
This is an excellent example of a Victorian 1854 pattern infantry officers sword.
Retailers mark on the ricasso "Larcom & Vesey, 51 Queen Street, Portsmouth" (tailors and outfitters based at 52 Queen Street 1882-1887 and then at 51 Queen street from 1887-1905) and proof mark to the obverse. The blade terminates in a spear point and is etched on both sides with panels of scrolling foliage above and below a rayed kings crown and the cypher of Queen Victoria, single fuller to both sides. rayed crowned Great Britain emblem above the makers mark. Gothic brass guard. An oval within the guard bears the cypher of Queen Victoria above the flowers of the union. Black shagreen wrapped grip with twisted copper wire. The sword is complete with its steel scabbard with twin suspension rings.
*Condition*
The blade is in excellent condition with no nocks or pitting. The engraving is clear. The grip is in good condition with minor fading to the shagreen as to be expected on a sword this age. The scabbard fits securely and has some rusting and loss of colour to the black paint. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
