*British, 1827 Pattern Royal Navy Officer’s Sword, with Bullion Sword Knot*

A fine example of the British 1827 Pattern Royal Navy Officer’s Sword, featuring the characteristic gilt-brass Gothic hilt bearing the crowned fouled anchor motif of the Senior Service. The lion-head pommel and backstrap are well detailed, with the white rayskin (shagreen) grip bound with twisted brass wire remaining complete and tight. The folding guard flap is present and functional, indicating private purchase quality. Retains its original blue and gold bullion sword knot, faded with age but firmly attached.

The bright, single-fullered blade measures approximately 79 cm (31 in) and remains un-etched, showing the classic spear-point form. A PROVED starburst cartouche is stamped near the ricasso, of the un-plugged type commonly found on Solingen-manufactured or retailer-supplied blades. The overall length is 93.2 cm (36¾ in).

Approximate Measurements: Overall length: 93.2 cm (36¾ in). Blade length: 79 cm (31 in)

Historical Note:
The 1827 Pattern replaced the 1805 design and has remained the defining sword of the Royal Navy officer for nearly two centuries. The example here bears the King’s Crown above the fouled anchor, firmly dating it to the reign of George V or George VI (c. 1910–1952). The absence of decorative etching suggests either a replacement or economy blade supplied during wartime, or one intended for later personal engraving that was never completed. Such un-etched examples are uncommon and often associated with active-duty officers during the First or Second World Wars.

*Condition*
Blade retains a bright surface with scattered areas of dark staining and minor pitting towards the tip. Gilt-brass hilt with mellow patina and light verdigris in recesses. Rayskin grip complete and in very good order, with all wire wrap intact. Sword knot showing wear and discolouration but present and original. No scabbard. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
