*British, 1827 Pattern Royal Navy Officers Dress Sword & Scabbard, Kings Crown, Hinged Guard*
Marked on spine: "Made in London"
The first Royal Navy pattern sword was created in 1805, its elegant but impractical design being superseded by a solid-hilt design developed in 1827.
31" single-edge steel blade with spear tip and 2/3 fuller, burnished Arabesque decoration with Kings crown over fouled anchor and Royal Crest. Flush proof button, solid brass gothic knuckle bow with scroll quillon and hinged locking plate. The hinged guard flap, which had been standard (if not universal) from 1822, started to disappear in the 1850s, to be replaced by a solid brass guard almost universally after around 1860. Wire-bound shagreen grip with lion pommel and back strap.
Complete with black leather scabbard with brass chape, middle band and mouthpiece with two suspension rings.
