*British, 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Troopers Sabre & Scabbard*

Approximate measurements: 71.5cm blade, 83.5cm overall
No Markings

This is an original early 19th century light cavalry sabre. The precise date of manufacture is unknown due to the absence of makers mark and stamps however its' condition does indicate its age and originality.

The Pattern 1796 light cavalry sabre was primarily used by British light dragoons, hussars, and the King’s German Legion light cavalry during the Napoleonic Wars. It was also adopted by the Prussians (as the 1811 pattern or “Blücher sabre”) and used by Portuguese, Spanish, and Indian cavalry into the early 20th century. The sabre’s pronounced curve facilitated slashing attacks in cavalry actions. Its blade widened near the point, enhancing its effectiveness in slashes, though at the cost of balance. This design made it easier to use than the heavier Pattern 1796 Heavy Cavalry Sword and allowed it to be wielded by all cavalrymen, not just the largest and strongest.

*Condition*
This sword is in good condition commensurate with age and service. There is some discolouration to the blade. The grip shows wear and tear. The steel scabbard is loose and has some dents and pitting. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
