*Brazilian, c.1937, M1908/34 Knife Bayonet with Scabbard & P37 Web Frog*
Brazilian Model 1908/34 knife bayonet, manufactured in Czechoslovakia for Brazil and intended for use with the 7 mm Mauser M1908/34 Police Carbine (Czech vz. 12/33 pattern), and also compatible with the .30-06 calibre M1908/34 and M954 short rifles produced later at the Brazilian state arsenal. The bayonet retains its characteristic straight, single-fullered blade and steel hilt with forward-curving quillon, wooden grip scales secured by screw bolts, and steel pommel with mortise slot.
The crossguard is clearly stamped “7681”. The bayonet is accompanied by its correct leather scabbard with blued steel mounts, fitted with a frog stud stamped “FI” within an oval, identifying Fábrica de Itajubá, the Brazilian state arms factory.
The bayonet and scabbard are accompanied by a British Pattern 1937 white web bayonet frog, marked C.N./A.A./0997, with M.W.&S Ltd maker’s stamp, 1955 date, and broad arrow government acceptance mark. The white webbing indicates ceremonial, parade, or specialist unit issue rather than field service.
Approx. Measurements – Blade length: 29 cm. Overall length: 42.5 cm.
Historical Note: In 1937, Brazil placed a major contract with the Czechoslovak Republic for 100,500 M1908/34 Police Carbines and bayonets, manufactured by Československá zbrojovka a.s. at Brno. The M1908/34 bayonet was produced exclusively in Czechoslovakia as part of this contract, with no evidence of bayonet manufacture at Fábrica de Itajubá, whose involvement was confined to rifle production and later re-barrelling programmes. The carbines were chambered in 7 mm Mauser and intended primarily for police and internal security forces. The bayonets supplied follow the established M1908 pattern but are distinguished by their longer blades and wooden grip scales secured by screw bolts.
Following delivery, a portion of these carbines were later re-barrelled to .30-06 calibre at Fábrica de Itajubá, resulting in continued service of the M1908/34 bayonet pattern with both 7 mm and .30-06 short rifles.
The accompanying British Pattern 1937 frog, dated 1955, reflects post-war British production and illustrates the long service life of P37 web equipment well beyond the Second World War, with white webbing commonly associated with ceremonial or policing roles.
*Condition* Bayonet in good, honest service condition. Blade shows scattered age staining, light pitting, and softened finish consistent with use and long storage, with the fuller remaining clearly defined. Hilt retains its original form with quillon intact; wooden grip scales show wear, shrinkage, and small age cracks around the fasteners but remain solidly fitted. Markings to the crossguard are legible. Scabbard leather body remains sound, with age darkening and surface wear, and retains its blued steel mounts. Frog stud marking “FI” is clearly struck. The white P37 web frog shows age toning, light staining, and wear commensurate with age, with all printed markings still readable. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
