~ Boer War British Artillery Shell with No. 56 Mk IV Fuze ~

This is a British 15pr shell which would have been fired out of a BL 15-pounder 7 cwt during the Boer War period. The BL 15-pounder was the standard field gun for the British Army and a total of 166,548 shells were fired in the second Boer War. The No. 56 Fuze had a maximum timed range of 4,100 yards (3,700 m) because it only burned for 13 seconds. These shrapnel shells were usually time-set to burst in the air above the enemy although they could also be set to explode upon impact.

*Condition*

This shell is in remarkable condition for its age. The shell is evenly pitted and the fuse has some minor marks. It still contains its internal pieces. Please see pictures for more detail as they form part of our condition report.
