*Austro/Hungarian M1867 Werndl Rifle Yataghan Bayonet, Shortened, German Made by Gustav Felix of Ohligs (Solingen), Regimental markings, Dated 1901*
This is a very nice example of the Yataghan bayonet designed for the Austrian M-1867 Werndl-Holub Rifle. It features the early leaf spring bayonet catch design and durable gutta percha grips. Originally equipped with a 22 1/2" (57cm) "Yataghan" saber blade, it underwent shortening to 18 1/2" (47cm) after the 1873 revision of the Werndl-Holub design, leading to the Model 1867/73. The term "Yataghan" originates from the Turkish word meaning "one who lays down," reflecting the distinctive downward-sweeping double-curve blade profile. This design not only enhances strength and rigidity but also ensures optimal alignment of the hilt and point for efficient thrusting.
Maker marked on the ricasso "GF" and double-headed Hapsburg Imperial eagle, on the obverse "und Sohne, Ohligs." and on the Quillon regimental markings "1901, 1st B 53" and in the centre "36". 46.5cm blade is steel, single-edged and fullered on both sides. Grips are two piece chequered black pressed leather. Left grip retained by four small steel rivets and right grip by three rivets and leaf spring securing screw. External spring and catch with large push button. Crossguard form: long lower section, straight then sweeping forward to form hook-like quillon and with characteristic ball above the muzzle ring.
GF likely to be the monogram of Gustav Felix (letters of equal size, addorsed) used in 1899. Ohligs became a suburb of Solingen, Germany in 1929.
46.5cm blade, 59.7 overall
