Antique Double Barrel Side By Side Howdah Percussion Pistol

Out of stock

This is an example of the scarce Side By Side Percussion Howdah pistol. A Howdah pistol refers to a large caliber hand gun with multiple barrels. They were often used in the late 19th and early 20th centenary throughout India and Africa. The term "howdah pistol" comes from the howdah, a large platform mounted on the back of an elephant. Its main use was for defence against Tigers, Lions and other large dangerous animals that could be found in the wilderness. There are three German looking proof marks to the underside and the numbers 5 and 7 stamped under each barrel. An impressively large pistol with obsolete calibre status so no license required.

*Condition*

Both hammers lock and release in two positions with a strong action, no signs of previous repair, some pitting in keeping with age. Percussion nipples damaged and the left hammer has lost its front half.
