~ An Early 19th Century Pair of Early Percussion Duelling Pistols by Mortimer ~

Here we have an excellent example of a professionally restored pair of Mortimer of London percussion pistols.

Even if the percussion system only became the British army standard in 1820, the system has been used prior to that by various manufacturers.

It is the case of this pair of pistols who feature the late 18th century hinged ramrod design. The steel barrels read on top ”London” and the foliage decorated lockplates read “Mortimer St James Street”.

The trigger guards are ornate with foliage and end with pineapple shaped finials.

The walnut chequered grips bear on top silver cartouches with etched axes. Further up we can observe the rear sight followed by a decorative gold band and the elaborate front sight at the end of the muzzle.

One of the dolphin shaped hammers is a period replacement.

~ Dimensions ~

The barrels are 8 inches (20.3 cm) long and the overall length of the pistols is 13 1/3 inches (34.3 cm).

~ Condition ~

As seen in the pictures the pistols have been fully restored and their condition is excellent.

Both pistols half cock, cock and release with a strong spring.

The bores are clean, free of pitting and damage.

On one of the pistols the safety catch is engaging on half cock and on the other it doesn’t seem to engage.
