This sword comes with the standard trooper`s pattern, a straight blade with one cutting edge and the back thickened for most of its length to give added strength.
The grip is made of wood which was generally wired, but for practical reasons some officers prefer them unwired, as is the case here.
The steel back piece of the grip is the standard knucklebow pattern. The guard comes with six holes.
Officers carried a service sword, also termed an "undress sword", with a blade of identical general form to that of the trooper's pattern. However, many officers' blades bore etched, or blued and gilt, decoration. The guard, in contrast, was entirely different from the trooper's pattern, being of bowl form, and incorporating an elaborate pierced honeysuckle design with a prominent rear quillon. This hilt form is often referred to as a 'ladder hilt.
~ Dimensions ~
The blade is 33 inches (84 cm) long and the overall length is 41 inches (106 cm).
The piece weighs 2.25 Kg.
~ Condition ~
There is some surface nick and rust showing activities on the scabbard but the blade is free from these.
The blade shows some pitting expected with age.
There is some patina on the hilt but overall the item is in good condition for its age.
