As seen in the pictures there are numerous marks and stamps on the reverse side of the piece.
Original 4.5-inch British naval shell base, inert and safe, dating from the mid-20th century. The 4.5-inch gun was a standard naval weapon of the Royal Navy, fitted to destroyers, cruisers, and later frigates from the Second World War onwards. It was widely used in both anti-aircraft and surface bombardment roles.
This shell base is constructed from heavy steel with brass fittings, showing clear machining and wartime manufacture. Bases like this are often recovered from deactivated shells and make excellent display pieces for naval or ordnance collections.
