*1917 WW1 German Butchers Sword Bayonet & Scabbard, F.W. Holler of Solingen, for the 98/05 Mauser. Dated*
With its 14.5inch blade this is the infamous 'Butcher' bayonet as used by the front-line troops of the Germany Army during WW1. The bayonet was designed for use with the 7.92 mm Gewehr 98 bolt action Mauser Rifle, being one of the main service rifles of the German Army pre and post WW1. The M1898/05 superceded the M1898, whose long, slender blade was prone to breakage. The M1898/05 was the most common German bayonet of the First World War. This is the second pattern S98/05 Bayonet, known as the n/A (neuer Art = newer model). The second pattern lacked the first pattern's vestigial muzzle ring (or 'ears') and incorporated a flashguard.
These are often called “butcher blades,” due to their resemblance to a butcher’s knife of the period.
This example was made in 1917 by F.W. Holler of Solingen. It carries the Royal Cypher of Kaiser (Emperor) Wilhelm II of Prussia, who reigned 1888–1918 and a spine acceptance date of 17, indicating 1917. Standard refinished black metal scabbard.

The blade is in good condition with some tarnishing and pitting. Clear marks. This is a fine example of a sought after WW1 Bayonet. Blade fits very nicely into the scabbard. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
