~ 1856 Pattern Pioneer Sword And Scabbard By Wilkinson ~

The ricasso is stamped with a serial number of '894' and Wilkinson London to one side, to the other is 'WD' for war department, the broad arrow and a couple of proof marks.

This pattern of saw back sword was issued to the 10 man squad of Pioneers within each infantry battalion. There role was to clear obstacles and supervise heavy construction work.

~ Condition ~

Please refer to the images as part of the condition report. The sword is excellent, some blackening to the blade, the grip is tidy and all parts are firm. The scabbard is in good order with tight stitching, the brass tip has several knocks and the still supple leather is lightly scuffed. The sword fits the scabbard sweetly.

~ Dimensions ~

The sword is 70 cm (28 inches) in length with a 57 cm (22.5 inches) blade.
