1827 Pattern George VI Royal Navy Sword & Tassel

SKU: JA_915651406 Category:

The original Royal Naval sword was designed in 1805, although elegant in design it proved impractical and was replaced in 1827 by the solid hilt variant. In 1846 the Royal Naval blade was standardized for all Royal Naval officers, with the current lighter, straight single-edged blade being commissioned into service in 1929.

The sword bears the Kings crown on the basket (George VI).
The brass pommel is the shape of a lion`s head with its mane along the side of the grip. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the lion was the standard figurehead for lower ranking Royal Navy warships. It symbolized power, speed and aggression.
The grip of the sword is enclosed by brass cuffs.

The ricasso is marked "J.P. LENDERLEITH, 10 SACKVILLE St, LONDON W".

The blade comes with its own leather scabbard.

The scabbard has brass fittings and two safety hoops.

~ Dimensions ~

The blade length is 31 ½ inches (80 cm) and the sword length is 37 inches (94 cm). The sword in its scabbard has an overall length of 38 ½ inches (98 cm).

The sword weighs 1.07 kg.

~ Condition ~

The brass is slightly dulled with age.

The pommel has some slightly loss of gild.

The blade features some minor indentations but no surface rust.

The lock mechanism works.

The leather parts of the scabbard have some scratches and show signs of wear but everything is in good order.
