*Belgian, Cold War Dated 1989, A.B.L. (Armée Belge / Belgisch Leger) Army Blue Beret with Pugnantes Adjuvo Corps Badge, Preta, Size 59*
An original Belgian Army (A.B.L. – Armée Belge / Belgisch Leger) blue wool beret, complete with its fitted gilt metal cap badge and clearly dated to 1989. Manufactured by Preta, this is a well-preserved Cold War period example retaining both its internal markings and correct mounted insignia.
The beret is constructed from dense blue wool with a black leather sweatband and stitched edge binding. The interior retains a clear ink stamp within a diamond cartouche reading: “A.B.L. / preta / 1989 / mitin / 59”
Fitted to the front is a gilt metal Belgian military badge featuring a crowned cogwheel flanked by two lions, with the motto scroll reading “PUGNANTES ADJUVO” (“I assist those who fight”). This badge is associated with Belgian Army support and technical services, particularly logistics and maintenance-related corps.
The beret is size 59 (approx. 59 cm head circumference) and remains well-shaped, with the badge securely mounted.
Approx. Measurements – Size: 59 cm.
History Note: Belgian Army berets of this pattern were widely issued throughout the Cold War, with colour and badge denoting branch or role. The blue beret is commonly associated with support arms, and the “Pugnantes Adjuvo” badge reflects the role of technical and logistical units responsible for maintaining operational effectiveness behind the front line.
The bilingual A.B.L. marking reflects Belgium’s dual-language military system, while manufacturers such as Preta supplied contract headgear during the late Cold War period. Treatments such as “Mitin” were applied to protect wool from moth damage during storage.
*Condition* Very good overall condition. The wool body retains strong colour and shape with only light handling wear. Leather sweatband intact and supple. Interior stamp remains clear and legible. The badge is complete with both lugs present and shows light surface wear only. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
