*British or Continental, Late 18th Century, Flintlock Boxlock Travelling Pistol, Brass Mounted, Ramrod Fitted*

A late 18th century flintlock boxlock travelling or trade pistol of British or Continental manufacture, dating to approximately 1770–1800, fitted with a round smoothbore barrel of cannon form and mounted in a carved walnut stock with brass furniture.

The pistol is fitted with brass furniture throughout, including a rounded butt cap with engraved border and screw rosette, decorative sideplate, ramrod pipes, and trigger guard. A wooden ramrod with brass mounts is retained beneath the barrel, held by two brass pipes and a forward channel. Pistols of this form were commonly produced in Britain and on the Continent during the later 18th century for private purchase, and were carried in holsters, saddle furniture, or travelling cases.

Although no maker’s name is now visible, the overall form is consistent with late 18th century trade pistols of the type used by cavalry, travellers, and officers, and comparable examples are known in both British and Continental manufacture, including pistols of Light Dragoon style. The absence of visible markings is not unusual on privately made or export trade pistols of the period.

Approx. Measurements – Barrel length: 18 cm. Overall length: 32 cm.

Historical Note:
During the late 18th century large numbers of flintlock pistols were produced in Britain, France, and the Liège gunmaking region for both military and civilian use. Boxlock pistols with brass mounts and cannon barrels were popular due to their strength and compact form, and were commonly carried by cavalrymen, travellers, and private individuals. Many were privately purchased or trade-made, and surviving examples are often unmarked or have worn markings, making precise attribution difficult today.
