History Note:
Jimi Hendrix’s performances at the Royal Albert Hall in November 1967 are widely regarded as among the defining concerts of his career. Coming shortly after the release of Axis: Bold as Love, the shows captured Hendrix at the height of his creative and technical powers and helped cement his reputation as one of the most innovative guitarists of the twentieth century. The Royal Albert Hall concerts have since become legendary, frequently referenced in documentaries, books, and recordings relating to Hendrix’s short but influential career.
The photograph was taken by Val Wilmer (born 1941), a highly respected British photographer and writer best known for her documentation of the British jazz and rock scenes from the 1950s through the 1970s. Wilmer’s work has been published internationally and exhibited by major institutions, and her photographs of musicians such as Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, and leading figures of the jazz movement are considered important visual records of the era. Her images of Hendrix, in particular, are among her most recognised and collected works, valued for their intimacy and documentary authenticity.
