The photograph captures Muhammad Ali standing over Sonny Liston following the first-round knockout during their World Heavyweight Championship rematch, fought on 25 May 1965 at the St. Dominic’s Youth Center, Lewiston, Maine. The bout, later known as the “Phantom Punch” fight, ended just 1 minute 44 seconds into the first round, when Ali dropped Liston with a short, fast right hand that many ringside spectators failed to see clearly in real time.

At the time of the fight, Ali—who had reclaimed the heavyweight title from Liston the previous year—was in the early phase of his career under the name Muhammad Ali, having formally abandoned his birth name Cassius Clay in 1964.
