A late 18th-century Belgian (Liège) sea-service flintlock pistol, dating to the final years of the Prince-Bishopric of Liège prior to the French occupation of 1794. Measuring approximately 39 cm overall with a 22.5 cm iron barrel, this compact and robust pistol is typical of maritime arms produced in Liège for naval, merchant, and privateer use. The pistol is fitted with plain brass furniture including trigger guard and butt cap, a walnut stock of utilitarian form, and retains its original iron lanyard ring at the butt. The barrel is stamped with a crowned “ON” mark, interpreted as a Liège inspection or controller’s stamp rather than a maker’s mark. The pistol is of obsolete flintlock calibre and is sold as an antique.
Historical Note: Liège was one of Europe’s principal arms-manufacturing centres in the late 18th century, supplying large quantities of firearms for maritime service across Europe and the wider world. Sea-service pistols of this type were designed for close-quarters combat aboard ships, where a single discharge was followed by immediate transition to a cutlass, boarding axe, or secondary firearm. The presence of a lanyard ring is a defining naval feature, allowing the pistol to be dropped after firing while remaining secured to the user. Although often described as “Belgian” in modern collecting terminology, this pistol predates the creation of Belgium and reflects pre-1794 Liège production under princely authority. Compared with contemporary British Sea Service pistols, Liège examples are typically more compact and less standardised, being commercially produced export arms rather than centrally issued ordnance patterns.
