*English Pewter Tankard – Hunts Benevolent Cup Winners 1952*

A mid-20th-century English hammered-finish pewter tankard, attractively crafted with a fully hand-textured body, rolled rim, and solid strap handle. The underside is stamped ENGLISH PEWTER, a mark widely used by good-quality British makers during the 1940s–1950s. One side is neatly engraved:

HUNTS BENEVOLENT CUP
WINNERS
1952

Measurements: approx. 9.9 cm tall, 9.1 cm base diameter, 6.5–6.8 cm top diameter.

Historical Note:
Hammered pewter saw a strong revival during the interwar and post-war years, influenced by the lasting appeal of Arts and Crafts design and the popularity of hand-finished metalware in domestic and club settings. Local sporting associations, social clubs, and benevolent societies often commissioned engraved pewter tankards as durable, affordable award pieces. This engraved example—linked to the Hunts Benevolent Cup—fits squarely within that mid-century tradition of community trophy ware.

*Condition*
The tankard displays an attractive, naturally aged pewter patina with expected handling marks and subtle surface wear. The hammered texture remains crisp throughout. The 1952 engraving is clean and sharply cut. There is a notable dent to one side of the base, clearly shown in the photographs. The interior shows typical dulling and light residue consistent with age and use. The strap handle remains tight and secure. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
