*Soviet era reproduction, ‘Budyonovka’ (Будёновка) Style Red Army Wool Field Cap, With Red Star Badge*

A Soviet Red Army Budyonovka-style pointed wool field cap, constructed from coarse brown felted wool with fold-down ear and neck flaps secured by small late-Soviet brass star buttons. The front displays a large red felt five-pointed star, fitted with a gilt and red-enamelled aluminium hammer-and-sickle badge of post-1955 pattern. The cap is fully lined in black cotton and stitched in six-panel construction, giving the characteristic domed silhouette of later parade and souvenir pieces.

Historical Note:
The iconic Budyonovka was introduced during the Russian Civil War in 1918 and remained the primary winter field cap of the Red Army into the 1930s, famously associated with the cavalry units of S. M. Budyonny. Original wartime examples were made in grey or brown wool with cloth or early metal stars, and production ceased during the early months of the Second World War when more practical winter headgear replaced it in 1941. This example follows the traditional pattern but shows features—modern enamel cap star, uniform brown felt, machine-finished seams, and late-Soviet brass star buttons—that firmly place it as a Soviet-era reproduction (1960s–1990s).

Although not an original interwar issue, Soviet-era reproductions such as this remain desirable to collectors because they were produced in state workshops using better-quality wool, proper cotton linings, and regulation brass star buttons—features often absent on modern tourist copies. These later examples retain the authentic Soviet aesthetic and construction methods, offering a genuine period-made item rather than the flimsy, synthetic-fibre replicas produced after the 1990s. As a result, they occupy a strong niche between true wartime pieces and modern costume versions, making them attractive, affordable display items for Red Army collections.
