*British, Royal Navy Shore Establishment Plaque: HMS Mercury, “Celer et Fidelis”*

A finely carved and painted Royal Navy ship’s crest plaque for HMS Mercury, the Royal Navy’s historic Communications and Signals School. The badge displays the classical caduceus of Mercury—winged staff with intertwined serpents—set within a rope-bordered blue roundel surmounted by the Naval Crown. A scroll beneath bears the Latin motto Celer et Fidelis (“Swift and Faithful”). The crest is mounted on a varnished hardwood shield with a keyhole metal hanging plate to the reverse.

Dimensions: the wooden shield measures approximately 15.4 cm wide by 17.7 cm tall.

Historical Note:
HMS Mercury was the Royal Navy’s principal Communications and Radio School, formally established in 1941 and operating until its closure in 1993. Located primarily at Leydene House in Hampshire, Mercury trained generations of wireless telegraphists, radio operators, signal ratings, and later, naval communications specialists involved in cryptography, satellite systems, and electronic warfare. The caduceus symbol reflects the School’s role in speed and accuracy of communication, while the motto Celer et Fidelis encapsulates the ethos of naval signalling: rapid, precise, and utterly reliable. Plaques of this type were typically produced for wardrooms, offices, allied exchanges, and presentation purposes.

*Condition*
Good overall display condition with light age wear. Some minor surface marks and small paint rubs to the crest, with a few scratches and handling marks visible on the wooden shield. Reverse shows the original metal keyhole hanging fixture stamped “Made in Great Britain”. Stable and ready for wall mounting. Please see  photographs as part of the condition report.
