*German, WW2, Black Wound Badge – “Verwundetenabzeichen in Schwarz”, Maker Marked “32” (Wilhelm Hobacher, Wien)*
A genuine German Second World War Black Wound Badge (Verwundetenabzeichen in Schwarz), awarded to Wehrmacht, Luftwaffe, Kriegsmarine, and Waffen-SS personnel injured in combat. Die-struck steel, with its original black lacquer finish now largely worn through to the darkened base metal — a typical sign of service wear. The obverse displays the M35 steel helmet surmounted by a raised swastika above crossed swords, framed by an oak-leaf wreath.
The reverse is manufacturer stamped “32”, confirming production by Wilhelm Hobacher, Wien — a recognised wartime contractor. Fitted with its original pin-back assembly, including the textbook Hobacher block-hinge and round-wire catch. Fully magnetic core, as expected for this grade.
Historical Note: Instituted on 1 September 1939, the Black Wound Badge represented the 3rd Class, awarded for 1–2 combat wounds, or combat-related injuries such as shrapnel trauma or damage from air raids. More than a decoration, it was a visible mark of front-line experience worn proudly on the left breast pocket. Hobacher examples are a desirable variant owing to their well-defined detail and quality construction.
*Condition* Good, honest example retaining strong original detail. Black finish has some rubbing from handling and wear. Light oxidation and old surface residue to the reverse around the hinge and catch; pin operates correctly and securely. No repairs or alterations. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
