*German, WW2 – Iron Cross 1st Class (Eisernes Kreuz 1. Klasse)*

A solid period original Iron Cross 1st Class, awarded for battlefield bravery or outstanding leadership. The blackened core is of non-magnetic zinc/pot-metal, set within a nickel-silver frame featuring the correct beading pattern. The obverse shows the raised 1939 date beneath the swastika motif, with honest service wear and age toning to the frame.

Reverse with the standard hinge and catch solder mounts still firmly present, but the pin assembly now absent — a common loss on combat-worn examples. The rear is uncleaned, retaining original patina, with a small raised maker-style stamping area visible to the right of the catch (unreadable from images).

A sound, entry-level EK1 that remains entirely original despite the missing pin.

Measurements: Approx. 46 mm x 46 mm (standard EK1 format).

History Note:
The Iron Cross was re-instituted by Adolf Hitler on 1 September 1939 to mark the outbreak of the Second World War, reviving a Prussian decoration first established in 1813. The Iron Cross 1st Class was awarded for repeated acts of bravery in the field or for outstanding combat leadership, typically to NCOs and officers. It was worn directly on the left breast pocket, above the Iron Cross 2nd Class ribbon when both were held. By war’s end, approximately 300,000 EK1s had been awarded — a relatively small number compared with the millions who served — making original pieces highly collected today. Post-war veteran examples, theatre props, and commemorative copies such as this one reflect the enduring recognition of the iconic Iron Cross design even after the fall of the Third Reich.

*Condition*
