A genuine and complete pair of U.S. military-issue aviator sunglasses by Randolph Engineering Inc., manufactured under Defence Logistics Agency contract number DLA 100-90-C-4143, and produced to the MIL-S-25948J military specification. This is the classic HGU-4/P pattern used by U.S. Air Force and Navy aircrew, designed for optimum compatibility with flight helmets, headsets and oxygen masks. The frame is the desirable gold-finish military variant and remains fitted with its original impact-resistant, neutral-grey optical glass lenses, providing accurate colour performance and reduced glare in cockpit lighting conditions. The original embossed USAF issue case accompanies the sunglasses.
Markings: All markings match official Randolph Engineering aircrew-issue production. The temples are stamped “5½ RANDOLPH ENG. USA”, confirming maker and size, and “R/E USA” as the manufacturer code. Behind the nose pads, the bridge is stamped “AF-52□20”, confirming aviation geometry with 52 mm lens width and 20 mm bridge. The original vinyl issue case is embossed with “SUNGLASSES HGU-4/P MIL-S-25948J – IMPACT RESISTANT – NOT SAFETY GLASSES – RANDOLPH ENGINEERING INC – CONTRACT NO. DLA 100-90-C-4143”.
Historical Note: The HGU-4/P aviator design was adopted by the United States Air Force in 1958, replacing earlier AN-series eyewear with a lighter frame, improved peripheral vision and bayonet temples engineered to fit securely beneath aircrew headgear. The MIL-S-25948 specification ensured rigorous standards in optical clarity, impact resistance and true-colour lens rendering to reduce pilot eye fatigue at altitude.
Randolph Engineering became the principal Department of Defence supplier from c.1982 onward, and continued issuing this model across the late Cold War period. Contract numbers beginning “100-90-…” indicate procurement in Fiscal Year 1990, placing this example in operational service at the height of U.S. tactical aviation in the final years before digital helmet-mounted displays superseded traditional flight sunglasses.
*Condition* The sunglasses remain in good vintage condition, with the gold finish retaining much of its original appearance, though there is some age-related plating wear and verdigris visible around the nose pad assemblies and inner bridge area. The hinges are sound, the bayonet temples remain straight and properly tensioned, and the original solder joints are secure. The lenses are the correct military grey type with only minor surface marks and no chips or cracks.
