*German, WW2, SS Horseman’s Plaque “Für treue Dienste in der SS 1942”, Cast Metal Horse Head on Wooden Mount, Private Commission*
A striking German equestrian presentation plaque featuring a cast brass horse’s head in high relief, mounted on a dark-stained wooden backboard with an applied brass plate engraved “Für treue Dienste in der SS 1942” (“For loyal service in the SS, 1942”).
The composition evokes the equestrian and cavalry traditions associated with mounted units of the period, where horses remained integral to transport, reconnaissance, and ceremonial duties. The subject matter and inscription suggest that this piece was privately commissioned—possibly as a commemorative or commemorative-style gift—reflecting the aesthetic of wartime presentation items.
The horse’s head is solidly modelled with good anatomical definition, retaining traces of its original gilt finish with silvering now exposed in areas through wear. The oak mount is fitted with a hanging loop and two rear securing bolts.
Measurements: Approx. 23 cm high × 20.8 cm wide × 1 cm deep
Historical Note:
The phrase “Für treue Dienste in der SS” (“For faithful service in the SS”) mirrors the wording used on official SS long-service awards introduced in 1938. However, this plaque’s format and horse motif indicate a non-official, likely locally produced or privately commissioned commemorative piece. Such plaques were often created for presentation or decorative purposes, drawing upon recognised award inscriptions and iconography from the period rather than adhering to official forms.
*Condition*
