*British, WWII, Royal Navy HMS Superb Sweetheart Brooch, Enamel & Gilt*
A fine WWII-period Royal Navy sweetheart brooch for HMS Superb. The badge is beautifully finished in gilt metal with deep blue enamel, mounted to a horizontal bar brooch fitting. The ship’s crest is displayed at centre: a golden lion passant guardant on a blue field, surmounted by a naval crown, with the ship’s name “H.M.S. Superb” in enamel scroll below.
Measuring 5.8cm x 2.7cm, this is a striking item of wartime jewellery. The reverse retains its original pin fitting.
Historical Note: Sweetheart brooches were privately purchased gifts given by sailors to wives, fiancées, mothers, or sisters during the First and Second World Wars, worn with pride on the home front. HMS Superb was a Minotaur-class light cruiser launched in 1943, seeing service in the later stages of WWII and subsequently with the Royal Navy into the Cold War era. Her crest — the golden lion — reflected strength and pride, and was carried into sweetheart jewellery such as this example.
*Condition* The enamel remains in very good condition with only minor surface wear. The gilt retains much of its finish, though with some age-related tarnish and wear, particularly on the reverse. Pin and clasp remain intact though show green verdigris at the hinge, consistent with age. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
