*German, WWII, Kriegsmarine U-Boat War Badge, Made by Schwerin Berlin 68*
A fine WWII German Kriegsmarine U-Boat War Badge (U-Boots-Kriegsabzeichen), constructed in gilded tombac. The obverse displays a laurel wreath tied at the base, surmounted by the German national eagle clutching a swastika, with a horizontal submarine running through the centre. The reverse is crisply stamped “SCHWERIN BERLIN 68”, denoting manufacture by Schwerin & Sohn of Markgrafenstraße 68, Berlin. Complete with its original vertical pin, hinge, and catch assembly, all functioning.
Historical Note:
The U-Boat War Badge was instituted on 13 October 1939 by Grand Admiral Erich Raeder to recognise the hazardous service of Germany’s submarine crews. It was awarded after two war patrols, or earlier in cases of wounds or loss of a vessel.
Approximately 30,000–35,000 men served in the U-Bootwaffe during WWII. Of these, an estimated 28,000 were killed in action, giving the branch one of the highest casualty rates of the war — close to 80%. Every qualified sailor would have received this badge, but because so many U-boats were sunk with all hands, vast numbers of badges were lost beneath the sea. Surviving examples, therefore, are very rare and represent not only the prestige of the award but also the extraordinary risks faced by the crews who earned them.
Schwerin & Sohn of Berlin, based at Markgrafenstraße 68, was one of the most respected wartime manufacturers of Kriegsmarine awards. Their “Schwerin Berlin 68” mark is highly sought after by collectors, with these pieces noted for their sharp strike, excellent detailing, and durable fire-gilt finish.
*Condition*
The badge retains much of its original gilt finish, with light wear to the high points and natural age toning. Reverse shows patination consistent with age. The maker’s mark remains sharp and legible. Hardware (hinge, pin, and catch) intact and functional. A very good, honest example with strong presence. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
