*British, WWII, Original London Underground Enamel Air Raid Shelter Sign*

A scarce original World War II enamel sign directing civilians to an Air Raid Shelter, issued by London Underground during the Blitz. Of rectangular form with red border, black lettering AIR RAID SHELTER and directional arrow, the sign is prominently topped with the London Underground roundel. Produced in enamel on steel for durability, it retains its four original mounting holes. Dimensions: 40.3 cm x 16.7 cm.

Historical Note:
From September 1940 to May 1941, London endured the Blitz – nightly raids in which the Luftwaffe dropped bombs across the city. As casualties mounted, the London Underground became synonymous with shelter and survival. Platforms and tunnels were converted into deep shelters, housing thousands of Londoners nightly. Signs such as this one were fixed to street-level entrances and passageways, guiding civilians to safety. The Underground roundel reinforces its origin with London Transport, making it an evocative symbol of both the wartime Home Front and the resilience of the capital’s population.

*Condition*
The sign remains in very good, displayable condition. The enamel surface is clean and bright, with some expected edge wear and chipping around the mounting holes and corners, consistent with service use. Minor scratches and small surface marks are visible, but the lettering, arrow, and roundel remain crisp and bold. The reverse shows typical dark oxidisation to the steel plate, confirming age. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
