Large and imposing sterling silver sweetheart brooch modelled on the RAF Flight Engineer half-wing brevet: a finely feathered outstretched wing supporting a central laurel wreath bearing a pale turquoise enamel “E.” The laurel sprays retain their translucent gingery-brown enamel. Original pin-back fitting to reverse, stamped “STERLING.” 5.2cm wide x 1.5cm tall.
Historical Note:
The Flight Engineer trade was introduced during WWII for the heavy bomber force, with the single-wing “E” brevet adopted from 1942. Airmen bought or gifted miniature “sweetheart” versions for wives and family as tokens of service and pride. The sterling construction, palette and pin style are typical of 1940s wartime production.
