*British, Post-WW2, Royal Air Force Air Marshal’s Rank Flag (3-Star), 60 × 90 cm, With Inglefield Clips*
An original Royal Air Force Air Marshal’s rank flag (3-star), constructed of stitched panels of coloured cloth with a white canvas hoist. The flag measures 60 × 90 cm and retains its original rope with bronze Inglefield clip fittings at each end for quick attachment to halyards. The design comprises horizontal bands of purple–blue–red–blue–purple, with the central red band signifying senior command authority. Clearly marked on the hoist:
“United Kingdom. Air Marshal (3 star) 60 × 90 cm 991251124 MPSMS/0061”.
History Note: The Air Marshal flag denotes the presence of a Royal Air Force officer of 3-star rank, equivalent to Lieutenant General in the Army or Vice Admiral in the Royal Navy. Introduced after the Second World War, RAF rank flags follow a colour-coded system: light blue fields for the service, purple for seniority, and a central red stripe for command. Such flags were flown on official residences, staff cars, and occasionally aircraft to identify the presence of the officer.
The RAF’s Air Marshal rank is a senior appointment, with incumbents typically commanding major commands or serving in high-level Ministry of Defence posts.
*Condition*
The flag remains in good issued condition, with strong and vibrant colours showing only light fading from service use. The fabric displays some minor surface marks and creases but no major tears, fraying, or damage. The canvas hoist is intact and clearly stamped with the full contract details, and both original bronze Inglefield clips remain present and fully functional. Overall, the piece is well-preserved and displays very well. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
