*British, WW2, Inglis Bren Mk I(M) .303 Light Machine Gun, with Bipod, Original Transit Crate, Dated 1942, Deactivated*
A deactivated Second World War period Bren Mk I(M) .303 light machine gun, manufactured by John Inglis & Co., Toronto, Canada in 1942. This example, serial number 4T3716, retains matching numbers across the receiver, barrel collar, and other components, a feature that significantly enhances its collectability. Of particular note is the “MA” stamp on the barrel clamp, indicating later service or refurbishment at the Lithgow Small Arms Factory in Australia, suggesting post-war Commonwealth reissue. Military broad arrow acceptance stamps are visible on multiple components, confirming its service status.
The Bren is fitted with its correct folding bipod, carrying handle, and quick-detachable 64 cm barrel, together with a 30-round curved .303 magazine. Overall length is approximately 115 cm. It is accompanied by its original-pattern wooden travelling crate (case number 2158), retaining military green paint finish with stencilled markings, rope carry handles, and the internal wooden blocks and felt padding designed to secure the gun during transport.
The Bren gun, introduced in 1937, became the standard light machine gun of British and Commonwealth forces during the Second World War. The Mk I(M) was the Canadian-produced variant, made under licence to supplement production at Enfield. These guns saw widespread service across all theatres of war, their rugged reliability and accuracy earning them an enduring reputation. This 1942 Inglis example’s later Commonwealth service connection adds further historical appeal.
*Condition*
Condition is very good. The metal surfaces show honest age wear to the finish, consistent with service use, while the wooden furniture retains its original patina with light handling marks. The transit crate is solid with original paint and stencilling, showing moderate age wear, and the internal dividers and felt pads remain in place. Deactivated to current UK/EU standard, the Bren cocks, dry-fires, and strips as per specification. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
