A WWII German K98 pattern combat bayonet, manufactured in 1942 by Berg & Co., Solingen-Ohligs (maker code agv). The 25 cm blued steel blade is stamped 42 agv on one ricasso, with serial number 6412 d on the opposite. Standard wood grip panels are secured by two screw bolts, showing honest service wear.
Fitted with an original steel scabbard, produced in 1943 by E.&F. Hörster, Solingen (maker code asw), serial numbered 3832 on the throat. Retains original wartime black leather frog, stitching intact, showing age and field wear. 25cm blade, Overall length in scabbard approx. 41 cm.
Historical Note: The K98 bayonet (Seitengewehr 84/98 III) was standard issue for German infantry during WWII, designed to mount to the Karabiner 98k rifle. Manufacturers like Berg & Co. and E.&F. Hörster were key Solingen firms producing bayonets and scabbards under coded markings to obscure origin from Allied intelligence. Wartime examples are often found mismatched, as armourers frequently interchanged scabbards during service.
This 1942/1943 pairing is a typical combat-period set, reflecting continued Solingen production at the height of the war.
*Condition* The bayonet is in good, service-used condition. Blade retains a bright steel finish with some light runner marks and patina, clear agv 42 and serial markings. Grips show handling wear with intact securing screws. Pommel and crossguard show light surface corrosion consistent with age.
