*Imperial German, WW1, 1917, DWM Luger P08 Pistol — Matching Numbers, Original Leather Lanyard, Deactivated*

This is a fine example of the iconic German Luger P08 semi-automatic pistol, manufactured by Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) and dated 1917 on the chamber, confirming it as a WWI issue piece.

The serial number 7255 (suffix "a") is clearly marked on the frame, barrel extension, and toggle components. Small parts throughout the pistol are correctly marked with the matching number "55", including the side plate, takedown lever, safety lever, trigger, and toggle link. The toggle is marked with the characteristic DWM intertwined monogram. The chamber is dated 1917, and the left side of the barrel extension carries multiple German imperial inspection marks ("crown over letter" proofs).

On the barrel, we see standard German military acceptance stamps, including the "crown over Gothic letter" inspection proofs and the Imperial eagle test proof, denoting military acceptance. The rear toggle link and extractor also bear these crown proofs, confirming the piece passed final inspection at the factory and was accepted for military service. The safety is properly marked "GESICHERT" in the upper position. The grips are original wood with deep checkering, showing typical service wear but no cracks or significant losses. The magazine included with this pistol is a later type, with a blued body and unmarked aluminium base.

A particularly rare feature is the original WWI-era leather lanyard, which is present and remains intact. The lanyard shows age-related cracking and some verdigris build-up around the brass rivets and clip, but it is solid and complete — a seldom-seen accessory that adds significant collector value and authenticity.

This pistol retains much of its original blue finish with typical high-edge wear from holster use, consistent with a genuine combat-issued sidearm. All factory markings remain crisp and legible. The bore and internals are deactivated in accordance with EU/UK regulations, and the pistol is accompanied by a valid Birmingham Proof House deactivation certificate (dated March 2025), which matches the pistol’s serial number and confirms 9mm calibre and 4" barrel length.

Historical note:
The Luger P08 is one of the most iconic and innovative semi-automatic pistols of the 20th century, famed for its toggle-lock mechanism and advanced engineering. DWM (Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken) was the main manufacturer during WWI, and 1917-dated examples are associated with the heavy fighting on the Western Front during Germany’s final wartime offensives. Many of these pistols saw service beyond WWI and were often carried into WWII by German officers and NCOs.

This example, with its original lanyard and matching numbers throughout the main components, represents a true piece of military history and would make a standout addition to any serious WWI or German militaria collection.

*Condition*
Fully deactivated. When fully cycled, the action can be cocked, but it does not hold and cannot be dry-fired.. Retains strong original blue with service-related edge and holster wear, giving it a pleasing combat patina. The grips are solid and undamaged, and all markings remain crisp. Magazine in good condition, with wear consistent with age and use. The scarce lanyard shows age cracking, some verdigris to brass fittings, but remains complete and displays well. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
