*British Victorian Gilt Diplomatic or Court Dress Sword with Etched Blade, Crowned VR Cypher, and Original Knot*
A superb and British diplomatic or court dress sword dating to the reign of Queen Victoria. This elegant example features a richly decorated gilt hilt with a large shell guard, intricately pierced and engraved with the crowned royal cypher, signifying direct royal association during this period. The hilt is further embellished with laurel and oak leaf motifs in neoclassical style, complemented by a beautifully cast crown-shaped pommel and a finely bound wire grip, all reflecting the status and refined ceremonial tastes of the court.
The straight, slender blade measures approximately 80.5 cm (93.5 cm overall) and is elegantly etched on both sides with scrolling foliage, military trophy motifs, and a crowned cypher, reinforcing its purely ceremonial purpose. The blade retains much of its bright original finish with sharply defined etching, suggesting a high-quality commission, likely from a leading London cutler such as Prosser or Wilkinson.
The sword is complete with its original black leather scabbard, featuring deeply engraved gilt brass mounts, including a finely detailed suspension band with a stylised shell frog stud, and an ornate engraved chape. Importantly, it retains its original bullion sword knot — a rare survival that enhances its display value and authenticity.
Swords of this type were worn by ambassadors, senior civil servants, and courtiers at state events and formal diplomatic occasions, serving as powerful symbols of royal favour and rank.
*Condition* Very good condition for its age. The blade remains bright with crisp, detailed etching and only minor age-related speckling. The gilt hilt and mounts show typical wear but retain strong visual presence. The scabbard leather has areas of surface wear and cracking yet remains structurally sound. The original bullion sword knot is complete, with expected fraying consistent with ceremonial use and age. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
This highly impressive and historically significant sword offers a rare opportunity to acquire an authentic ceremonial piece directly tied to the royal and diplomatic traditions of early 19th-century Britain.
