*Romanian AKM Type I Bayonet (Yellow Grip) (AK-47 Kalashnikov Variant) with Scabbard & Frog – AEP 4059*
This Cold War-era Romanian AKM Type I bayonet was designed for use with the AK-47 Kalashnikov variant rifles. It is marked AEP 4059 in electropencil on the crossguard, likely a depot or rack number rather than a manufacturer’s mark. The bayonet features integrated wire-cutting functionality when paired with the scabbard, and is distinguished by its yellow/red marbled phenolic resin grips.
The blade has a clip-point profile with a saw-back spine and a slot for engaging the lug on the scabbard, forming a functional wire cutter. The scabbard is black-painted steel with wear consistent with service use and includes the standard tan rubber insulator collar. A leather frog is present and securely fitted.

The AKM rifle, introduced in 1960 as an updated version of the AK-47, featured a redesigned bayonet lug to accommodate a new multipurpose bayonet. The resulting AKM Type I bayonet was a pioneering design—incorporating a sawback blade, insulated scabbard, and combined wire-cutter function. The rubber insulator on the scabbard made it safe for cutting electrified wire, while the hooked crossguard and retention strap added to its practical utility in both combat and field conditions.
Closely resembling the Soviet 6X3 pattern, the AKM Type I bayonet was produced widely across the Warsaw Pact. Romanian examples, such as this one, are easily recognised by their yellow-red marbled grips, rounded pommel, blackened steel scabbards, and rubber collars.
Condition:
Blade is clean with only minor signs of wear. The marbled grips are in good condition with no cracks and minimal surface scuffing. The scabbard retains much of its original finish, showing some light rust and patina. The leather frog remains intact and functional. Serial number is clear and legible.
