*Norwegian Re-Issue WW2 German M40 Helmet – Double Decal with Norwegian Crest – Leather Liner*
A fine example of a post-WWII Norwegian army reissue of the original German M40 steel helmet. This helmet retains its original Norwegian double decals, featuring the crowned lion crest clearly visible on both sides—an increasingly rare feature, as many of these helmets have been stripped for WWII restoration projects.
The helmet has been repainted in the standard Norwegian postwar grass-green finish and includes its original red-brown dyed leather liner, which remains fully intact and supple. Marked “58” on the outer liner tongue and “R59” on the inner side. The shell itself is stamped “308” (final digit unclear), consistent with German wartime manufacturing.
These reissued helmets were created around 1949, using captured or surplus German M35/M40 shells. Norway applied new decals, repainted the helmets, and retrofitted them with modified liners and chinstraps—this one includes the early-style chinstrap with buckle still present.
A very nice and complete Norwegian reissue helmet, ideal for collectors of WWII or Cold War militaria. These are becoming harder to find in original, unaltered condition.
