A classic example of an early 19th-century British naval midshipman's dirk, dating to around 1800–1810. This elegant yet practical sidearm features a crosshatched bone grip, the iconic lion-head pommel, and a curved crossguard with distinctive comma-shaped quillons. The curved blade is a spear point, double-edged and faintly etched with traces of original blued and gilt decoration—typical of presentation or officer’s dress weapons during the Georgian era.

Dirks of this form were carried by young officers as both sidearms and symbols of naval authority. Its styling places it within the period of the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812, making it an appealing and evocative collector’s piece from Britain’s age of sail.  In the late 18th and early 19th century Royal Navy, midshipmen (officers-in-training) traditionally carried short dirks rather than full-size swords. Midshipmen were technically warrant officers, not yet full commissioned “gentlemen,” so a small naval dagger (a “dirk”) marked their rank. The first official navy sword regulation (1805) assigned midshipmen scaled-down cut-and-thrust swords, but in practice many continued to wear short curved dirks in boarding and daily duty. Only by about 1856 did the Admiralty make the dirk the formal uniform weapon for midshipmen. Thus during 1800–1810, the midshipman’s dirk was a customary short weapon – often a curved “fighting” dagger – distinct from the larger straight officer swords.
