The Colt Government Model (or Model 1911) pistol was designed by John M Browning, in response to a US Army requirement for a large-calibre self-loading pistol. The M1911 operated on the short-recoil principle and was chambered for a .45 inch cartridge. It was an immensely successful design and, with small alterations, remained in service with US Forces until the 1980s. In addition it was purchased by many other armies and private individuals. Copies of the design were also produced in a number of countries. The Colt records dates this as a 1915 Government Model issue even though it is not stamped Government. The stamping on the magazine means it is not original to the pistol and was made by Check Mate Industries Inc in New York from a 1976-78's military contract.

Muzzle with separate barrel bushing retained by a spring button. Low blade foresight on top of the slide at the muzzle. Ejection port at the top right of the slide. Vertical slide serrations at the back end for gripping. Notch backsight dovetailed into the top of the slide. Exposed hammer with knurled spur. Controls are on the left of the frame, with slide hold-open lever and manual safety both acted upon by a single double-ended spring in a cylinder. Knurled push button magazine release. Lanyard loop on the heel. Grip safety in the back strap which also forms part of the beaver tail. Chequered wood grips with diamond patterns around the screw holes. Blue finish.
