The initials AK represent Avtomat Kalashnikova, Russian for “automatic Kalashnikov,” for its designer, Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov, who designed the accepted version of the weapon in 1947.  The AKM, adopted by the Soviet armed forces in 1959, is the most common development of the AK-47 assault rifle. Unlike the AK-47’s cast body, the AKM features a stamped body, with simplified internal components for easier manufacturing. Variants of the AKM were produced in several Warsaw Pact countries. This rifle was made in Romania. The P on the sight and the SAR fire selector settings are characteristic of Romanian made AKM's.
