The PPS, “Pistolet-pulemyot Sudayeva” or “Sudayev’s submachine-gun, a family of Soviet submachine guns, utilized the 7.62×25mm Tokarev cartridge. It was developed by Alexei Sudayev to provide a cost-effective personal defense solution for reconnaissance units, vehicle crews, and support service personnel. Widely employed by the Red Army during World War II, the PPS and its variants were later adopted by various countries within the former Warsaw Pact, as well as numerous African and Asian allies.
After World War II, the Polish Military Arsenal was reconstructed with predominantly Soviet-derived weaponry, including the PPS-43, redesignated PM (Pistolet Maszynowy) wz. 43 under license. Production of the PM wz. 43 occurred between 1946 and 1955 across different facilities, notably H. Cegielski – Poznań, identified by 'H.C.P.' in a circle which was later replaced by '6' in a circle.
The PM wz. 43/52, a modification of the PPS-43, featured a fixed wooden buttstock replacing the folding metal stock. Inside the buttstock, a compartment housed a standard cleaning kit, while a sling loop was added to the side. This alteration aimed to enhance the PPS's accuracy, though the increased weight and size of the PPS wz. 43/52 offset minimal gains in accuracy compared to the original PPS-43.
