Measurements approx 82cm tall, 5" / 12.8cm diameter at base.
Marked on the base: "Karth 258, Polte, Nov 1915, Magdeburg, Sp252"

"Polte Magdeburg" is the manufacturer, "250" is the lot number of that batch of cases which were made during 1915."Karth" is is short for "Kartusche" meaning cartridge (casing). "Sp252" is an inspection number -an abbreviation for Spandau.

In the first half of the 20th century, the firm of Polte Armaturen- und Maschinenfabrik OHG in Magdeburg, Germany was an important manufacturer of large fittings and one of the largest ammunition producers in the world. After the Second World War, it was mainly known for the mass employment of forced laborers and concentration camp prisoners (from June 1943 until the end of the war, by which time some 50% of the workforce were of this category).
