This WW1 unique piece of trench art is inscribed 1914-18 Diksmuide.
It memorializes The Trench of Death, part of the Belgian section of the Western Front (The Yser Front) during 1914-1918. Here, Belgian regiments endured harsh conditions to thwart the German advance towards France.
The Battle of the Yser, occurring in October 1914 along a 35 km stretch of the Yser River and Yperlee Canal between Nieuwpoort and Diksmuide, marked a crucial defensive stand by the Belgian army against the German forces. The triumph at the Yser allowed Belgium to retain a small portion of territory, despite Germany controlling the majority. King Albert's leadership during this battle elevated him to national hero status, fostering enduring national pride and providing a focal point for commemorations of sacrifice over the following century. The Trench of Death near Diksmuide served as a key bastion of Belgian resistance until the commencement of the Battle of Flanders on September 28, 1918, when a successful Anglo-Belgian offensive turned the tide.
